Tips of Things to Do before Selling Your Junk Car

Selling your junk car can be a time consuming process but if handled correctly by you and the junkyard company, it can actually be a smooth ordeal. Here are some things you should do before selling your car in order to have a hassle-free transaction.

1) Remove your personal belongings– Just like your house, your car tends to accumulate stuff over time.  There is a chance you have forgotten all the items you left in your car so it is your responsibility to take out all of your personal belongings before the tow truck comes to take your junk car. It might be tempting to just leave the items you no longer care for in the car however, this can hold back the process of selling your junk car. The junkyard is not a dumpster and it will be in your best interest to take out everything in your vehicle since you might overlook an important item! This will be the last chance you will get to find everything so make sure to look in usual spots like glove box and bin but also in out of the way places as well. Try checking underneath your floor mats, above visors, and don’t forget to take out your insurance cards. Take out your insurance cards even if you don’t think you’ll need them since it has too much personal information on it to be left behind in your junk car where it might go through many people before it is actually scrapped.

2) Make Sure Your Title Is in Order- Don’t forget to cancel your insurance and return your license plate. The most important item needed to transfer ownership of your vehicle to the junkyard is a valid title to the car. A valid title is needed in order for you to sign the car over to the junkyard company and if you don’t give them the ownership of it, you might have liabilities in the future even if it has been hauled away since it is technically under your name. Don’t forget to bring a valid picture identification card in order for the process to be legal. If you want to be extra sure on what the rules and regulations are regarding sales to junkyards & scrap yards, check with your local department of motor vehicles.

3) Look for Other Components to Sell- If a price for the exchange was already agreed upon with the junkyard company, give it to them in the condition you described it as when the deal was in place. However, if you feel that the price given to you doesn’t reflect much more than its scrap value, you might be able to make extra cash by selling valuable components of your car. For example, if you have new tires that still work great, buy four balding tires on cheap rims and swap them out. Also, your car’s battery always has a resale value if it isn’t too old, and recyclers will buy the lead inside the car battery even if it is old. If your electronics in your car is valuable and you are handy, you can remove your GPS or stereo systems.

4) Gasoline- If your vehicle still runs before you sell it to the junk yard, check to see if you still have gas so you can use it before your car gets towed. The value of the gasoline in the tank of your junk car can potentially represent a good portion of the total value of the price you are getting from the junkyard. Use only containers that are approved to carry gasoline. Junkyards will need to drain all of the fluids out of your car before recycling and scrapping the parts so no need to worry about the value of your gasoline to your junkyard.
