3 Important Things To Do Before Junking Your Car

When selling your car to a junkyard, the process may happen very fast, causing chaos. After you decide to junk your car, there are certain precautions to take. Before the tow truck shows up, remember these three important things in order to make the process go as smooth as possible.

Remove Personal Belongings

Cars tend to accumulate things over time. If you’ve had your car for a long time, there may be a few items in it that have been forgotten. Before the tow truck arrives to pick up the car, make sure that all of your personal belongings are removed.

Get Your Title

The most important thing you need in order to transfer ownership of a vehicle to a junkyard is a valid car title. If you don’t transfer ownership to the junkyard, you may still technically own the car, even though it’s been hauled away. If you have lost the title or don’t have one, you can complete a replace car title form at your local DMV.

Remove License Plates

When selling a car to a junkyard, the arrangements to pick up the car may be decided very quickly. In this rush you may forget to remove the license plates. In many states, you need to return license plates to the DMV before your registration can be cancelled. If the registration can’t be cancelled, you may not be able to cancel your car insurance policy either. Right after junking a car, make sure to call your insurance provider and cancel the insurance policy. You don’t want to have to be paying for insurance for a car that you no longer own!

What Paperwork Is Needed To Junk My Car?

If you are planning to scrap your old vehicle, junk car companies usually require either the title or registration and a driver’s license for the vehicle you are getting rid of.  This is a requirement for salvage companies because it safeguards them from buying stolen vehicles.  If the vehicle has no documentation, it is considered an “abandoned car” and cannot be scrapped.

Vehicles that are less than 10 years old, require the title and cannot be accepted with just the registration.  When the title is given to the salvage company, no other documentation is required.  On the other hand, when the registration is given, the registered owner’s driver’s license is also required.

  • The title of a vehicle is a legal form, establishing a person or business as the legal owner of the vehicle.
  • The registration of a vehicle shows the plate number and what vehicle that plate is registered to.

If you have misplaced the car title, you can acquire a copy from your state’s motor vehicle registration department. Once you have obtained the title copy, check to make sure every detail is accurate and it has the correct spelling of your name, and also keep a copy for yourself.

The phrase “no title, no problem” realistically means that if you do not have the title, it’s not a problem; however, you need to provide other forms of documentation.  You can scrap your car even if you don’t have the title, if you can prove ownership with the registration and the registered owner’s driver’s license.  This process is designed to protect both the seller and the salvage company.
